On April 27, 2015, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval announced the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) selected a site near Fallon, Nevada for their Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE), and $2 million in federal funds to launch the ground-breaking research project. FORGE will allow scientists and engineers to develop, test, and accelerate breakthroughs in enhanced geothermal technologies and techniques.
In April 2013, DOE industry partner Ormat Technologies succeeded in generating the nation's first commercial power from enhanced geothermal systems to the grid at Desert Peak, Nevada.

Through historic Recovery Act investment by the Energy Department, the Salt Wells geothermal area in Nevada has yielded several developments, including the 13 MW Salt Wells plant that Enel Power operates today.

On March 21, 2014, tribal leaders and community members of the Moapa Band of Paiute in Nevada celebrated the groundbreaking of the 250 MW Moapa Southern Paiute Solar Project, making it the first utility-scale solar project on tribal land.
